After nine months of testing and with many problems haven’t been solved, VMware cloud on AWS is finally available, and organizations can now judge whether the service meets their needs. The highly anticipated VMware cloud on AWS is finally available. This is the most difficult time for potential users. Bringing the environment of leading private cloud providers into the services of leading public cloud provider platforms has had a certain impact, but the lack of details makes many potential users in trouble. Important information about prices and features was recently announced in VMworld. Now, VMware customers must decide whether it's worth trying. Datapipe is a cloud computing service provider headquartered in Jersey, New Jersey, which works closely with AWS and VMware. According to the statistics of VMware, the cost of each host in the three-year contract is $109,366, which saves about 50% of the cost compared with the hourly billing rate on demand. As long as the internal product runs normally, another program can reduce the cost by 25% according to its internally deployed VMware product license. Since the standard AWS export fee is still applicable, IP and data transmission have separate fees. Each host is configured with two CPUs, 36 cores, 72 hyper threads, 512GB of RAM and flash memory. According to VMware, if a company signs a three-year contract with it, the total cost of ownership of VMware cloud on AWS is estimated to be as high as $0.09 per virtual machine per hour. This is equivalent to the instance cost of the native cloud, and the cost of the traditional on premises data center is $0.08 per hour. Retain or Abandon? Kyle Hilgendorf, an analyst at Gartner, a research firm, said whether the move is worthwhile will depend on an organization's internal environment. Erik Anderson, senior network engineer of Midwest healthcare company, said that his team runs business in the internally deployed data center, but is considering adopting the public cloud to localize the workload in other parts of the world. He said that these workload will depend on cost and other factors, but these decisions will not be completed in a short time. Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS, said that for customers, taking VMware cloud capacity as part of the service is no different from any other instance type being sold. Peter Scott, chief operating officer of DivvyCloud, a multi cloud automation and manager in Washington, said that the company's business may even be adopted in these two environments. DivvyCloud is a partner of VMware Cloud on AWS. He said that IT stores are worried about transferring some workloads to public clouds based on different operation modes, and it is not easy or flexible to expand. “Organizations basically take a lot of traditional workloads and put them in the public cloud, which is short-lived and has a different definition,” Scott said. “If you want to put these workloads in the public cloud and run 24 hours a day, it's best to run them in the data center.” The new functions have limitations. Customers can use the application back and forth, but they still have to pay the standard AWS export fee. Amazon will not charge customers for entering the cloud, but for most users, the cost of exporting data is too high, which is a main reason why the public cloud is criticized as workload locking. In addition, the VMware cloud provided by AWS is currently limited to the western United States (Oregon), and will not be used in other regions until 2018. AWS and VMware executives say this is only the first step in their partnership. Although they did not provide specific details about future services, they listed more closely integrated improvement projects. “I certainly realize that Amazon sees a lot of opportunities and spends more time in promoting it,” said Lucky of Datapipe.
